Visual Inspections: Ten Things your Eyes can Spot
This week we’ve been considering the process of testing and in particular the visual test and the kind of things you can spot on a visual inspection.
A very experienced professional PAT tester once told us that in all the years he had been carrying out PAT procedures, he had failed items more times on the visual inspection than on any of the electrical tests.
So with this thought, we’ve come up with a list of ten things we think you could possibly discover whilst performing a visual test on a portable appliance.
- Cracks or damage to the casing of an appliance
- Exposed wires in the cord
- Wrong fuse used in the plug and signs of overheating
- Incorrect or bad plug wiring
- Nicks or damage to the cable casing and anchorage security
- Missing screws or loose parts on an appliance
- Any switches and knobs not in working order
- Missing plastic coverings, i.e. iron water chamber caps
- Exposed internal areas e.g. insulation or internal workings
- LeakingĀ appliances such as Kettles, irons and washing machines
If you can think of any other things that could possibly be picked up on a visual inspection which we have missed out ,or if you have an interesting story on visual inspections, leave a comment or let us know via twitter.
